    Houston Elopement FAQ

Do I need to be a Texas resident to elope in Houston?

No! Anyone can get married in Texas regardless of residency. You just need a valid Texas marriage license.

How do we get a marriage license if we're from out of state?

Both applicants must appear in person at any Texas county clerk's office. Plan to visit on your first day in Houston — we have a county clerk finder tool to help you locate the nearest office.

Can foreign nationals get married in Texas?

Yes! Non-US citizens can absolutely get married in Texas. You'll need a valid passport (or government-issued photo ID from your country), and you may be asked for a visa or I-94 for identification purposes. No Social Security number is required — you can indicate 'none' on the application. There's no residency requirement.

What documents do foreign nationals need for a marriage license?

A valid passport is the primary document. Some county clerks may also ask for your visa, I-94 arrival/departure record, or a certified translation of documents not in English. If previously married, bring a certified copy of your divorce decree or death certificate. We recommend calling the county clerk's office ahead of your trip to confirm their specific requirements.

Is there a waiting period in Texas?

Texas generally has a 72-hour waiting period. Qualifying couples may avoid the wait through an applicable statutory exemption, an approved Twogether in Texas premarital education certificate, or a judicial waiver when granted. An approved Twogether in Texas course can also provide up to $60 off the marriage-license fee.

Can we elope on the same day we arrive?

If the 72-hour waiting period does not apply to you — for example with an approved Twogether in Texas certificate, a statutory exemption, or a judicial waiver that has been granted — you can have your ceremony the same day you fly in.

    Do we need witnesses?

No — Texas does not require witnesses for a marriage ceremony. You can elope as just the two of you.

How close are you to the airport?

We're about 10 minutes from George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and 35 minutes from Hobby Airport (HOU), with hotels, dining, and rental cars nearby.
