Courthouse Wedding vs Chapel Wedding in Houston — Which Is Right for You?

Compare cost, atmosphere, flexibility, and timeline. Why more Houston couples are choosing intimate chapel ceremonies over the courthouse.

Courthouse Wedding vs Chapel Wedding in Houston — Which Is Right for You?

Two legal paths, very different experiences

In Texas, a Justice of the Peace at the courthouse and an authorized wedding officiant at a private chapel produce the same legal result: you're married. Everything else — cost, atmosphere, flexibility, photos — is wildly different.

    Cost

A JP ceremony at the Harris County courthouse runs roughly $50–$100 depending on the judge and time. Our chapel packages start at $197 and include the officiant, the room, the music, the décor, and the license signing. Add photos and you're still typically under $400.

    Atmosphere

The courthouse is a working government office. Fluorescent lighting, security checkpoint, a 10-minute slot in a hallway, a JP you've never met. The chapel is a private warm-wood room, candlelight, your own playlist, and an officiant who has spoken with you in advance.

    Flexibility

JP ceremonies happen on the courthouse's schedule, mostly weekday business hours. Our chapel takes ceremonies seven days a week, including evenings and weekends.

    Timeline

Both options take 10–20 minutes for the actual ceremony. The chapel adds about 15 extra minutes for photos and signing.

    Who picks which

Couples who pick the courthouse usually want the absolute lowest cost and don't mind the setting. Couples who pick the chapel want a warm room they'll remember, a real officiant, and photos that don't show a metal detector in the background. Most of our 5,000+ ceremonies have come from couples who started by considering the courthouse.
